This eighteenth-century Georgian side table is made from dark brown mahogany with a warm timber finish. The circular tray top has a raised moulded edge and rests on a fluted turned pedestal column with a vase-shaped stem. Below the central turning, three cabriole legs extend outwards, decorated with detailed acanthus leaf carving and terminating in hairy claw-and-ball feet. The table stands 70 cm high, with a width and depth of 61 cm. Suitable for use in an English country house interior, this freestanding piece fits naturally beside the end of a sofa or as a decorative accent in a living room, hallway or study. The compact tripod base ensures stability on hard flooring surfaces, while the raised tray edge keeps small items securely contained on the surface during everyday domestic use.

Tripod tables emerged in Britain during the early eighteenth century, gaining widespread popularity during the Georgian period. Designed as portable occasional tables for serving tea or displaying candles, they were crafted with three legs to maintain stability on uneven stone or timber floorboards.

These tables were typically constructed from solid dense mahogany imported from the West Indies or South America. Construction features include hand-turned central columns, dovetail housing joints connecting the cabriole legs to the base, and hand-carved ornamental motifs such as acanthus leaves or ball-and-claw feet.

Authentic pieces feature signs of age including natural timber shrinkage resulting in slightly oval tops, hand-cut iron screws, and dark, unpolished oxidisation on the underside of the base. Hand-carved decorations will display subtle variations rather than machine-made uniformity.

Position the table beside a modern sofa or arm chair to serve as a functional drink rest or accent piece. The deep timber tones contrast effectively against contemporary neutral walls and contemporary soft furnishings.

Dust the surface regularly with a soft dry microfiber cloth and apply a high-grade beeswax polish once or twice a year to maintain the patina. Keep the table away from direct heat sources and radiators to prevent timber shrinkage or splitting.
