19th century

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Early 19th-century miniature bindings are small-scale books, typically under three inches in height, executed with the same rigorous bookbinding standards as full-sized volumes. They feature full leather covers, often morocco or calfskin, complete with raised spine bands and hand-tooled gilt decoration.

Regency bookbinders used vegetable-tanned leathers such as goatskin (morocco) or calfskin, combined with cotton or linen rag paper. The gilt ornamentation was applied by pressing brass hand tools heated with genuine 22 or 24-carat gold leaf into the leather surface.

Authentic 1820s volumes display characteristic period typography, hand-sewn page signatures, rag paper with visible chain lines or watermarks, and natural patina on the leather edges. The gilt tooling typically shows slight irregular placement indicative of hand craftmanship rather than machine stamping.

Miniature books work well placed on floating shelves, arranged within glass cloches, or stacked atop larger art monographs to add varying heights. Their small scale makes them suitable accent pieces for desk accessories, mantlepiece vignettes, or curio cabinets.

Store leather-bound volumes away from direct sunlight, excess humidity, and direct heat sources to prevent leather desiccation. Handle them with clean, dry hands, and keep them standing upright or resting flat without overcrowding the shelf.
