Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This large early twentieth-century set of butcher scales originates from a Lisbon shop and displays a polished warm gold brass finish. The construction comprises a turned central column topped with a sculpted bull head finial, a central balance cross-arm, and multiple suspended circular brass pans held by linked chains. The dimensions are 120 cm in height, 61 cm in width, and 15 cm in depth, and the piece includes a set of weights with three small weights missing. Suitable for rustic farmhouse interiors, this decorative kitchenalia functions as a striking decorative display piece for a kitchen island, workspace shelf, or retail shop counter. The heavy brass hardware creates a strong visual focal point while maintaining the functional character of traditional trade scales.

FAQs

In the early 20th century, brass butcher scales served as functional commercial balance systems used by tradespeople to measure meat and other produce by weight. The scales utilized counterweights placed on one pan to accurately determine the mass of items suspended on the opposite side.

Commercial scales from the 1920s were typically constructed using durable metals such as cast brass, bronze, and iron. Brass was preferred for counter display items due to its resistance to corrosion and polishable finish, often combined with steel or iron internal components for stability.

Authentic balance scales often feature stamped maker marks, weight verification marks, turned central pillars, and hand-fitted brass chains. Natural patination, wear near contact points on the pans, and detailed decorative motifs like animal heads further indicate historical production.

Large brass scales are frequently styled as focal points on kitchen islands, sideboards, or dining tables. Designers often fill the hanging pans with fruit, greenery, or small decorative items to add texture and visual interest to a space.

Preserving antique brass involves gentle cleaning with a soft cloth and warm, mild soapy water to remove dust. A specialized brass polish can be applied if a bright finish is desired, though leaving the aged patina intact maintains historical character.
