This late 19th-century French planter jardiniere originates from around 1880 in the French Revival style. Cast in spelter with a dark bronze finish, the piece includes a tin inner trough, a stamp reading 164 Depose inside, and scroll feet underneath. The decorative body displays acanthus leaf handles, a central shield with a torch and quiver relief motif, and moulded framing along the outer surface. Measuring 14 cm high, 46 cm wide, and 14 cm deep, the jardiniere sits suitably on a sideboard top in a dining room, living area, or hallway to hold small plants or floral arrangements. The neutral dark tone blends into traditional and classical interior schemes while adding a decorative focal point.

FAQs

Late 19th-century French jardinieres were decorative vessels created during the Third Republic, heavily influenced by Neoclassical and Louis XVI Revival aesthetics. They frequently display symetrical scrollwork, foliate embellishments, and classical symbols such as torches and quivers.

French metal jardinieres of the late Victorian era were predominantly crafted from cast spelter or bronze alloy, often finished with a dark bronze patina or gilt wash. Many featured removable metal liner trays to hold water and soil without eroding the decorative outer shell.

Authentic 1880s pieces show casting seam lines inside the frame, natural oxidisation in low-relief areas, and authentic age wear to the underside of the base. Look for cast iron or zinc internal liners, detailed crisp casting, and period-correct Neoclassical motifs.

An antique metal jardiniere functions as a striking table centrepiece or sideboard accent. It can be planted with living greenery such as ferns or bulbs, or used as a dry decorative vessel to store mail, hand towels, or polished spheres.

Dust regularly with a dry, soft microfiber cloth to clean deep carved details. Avoid liquid polishes or abrasive chemical cleaners that strip the original dark patinated finish, and always use a protective liner if housing live plants requiring moisture.
