This Edwardian Arts and Crafts visiting card tray dates to circa 1900 and originates from Cornwall. Made from solid copper with a warm metallic copper colour, the circular tray displays a hammered texture around the wide rim, a central repoussé fish motif with detailed scales and open mouth, chased horizontal water lines across the background, and the stamped maker mark "NEWLYN" near the base. The piece measures 14 cm wide, 14 cm deep, and 1 cm high. Today, this decorative dish finds a practical home beside the front door to hold keys and small items, on a desk as a stationery tidy, or on a dressing table to store jewellery and everyday accessories. It also functions as a striking standalone display object for collectors of British metalwork and regional Cornish antiques.

Founded in the late 19th century in Cornwall, the Newlyn Industrial Class was established to provide fishermen with alternative employment during off-seasons. Craftsmen were taught hand-hammering and repousse copper techniques, creating distinctive decorative items inspired by local marine life and coastal landscapes.

These pieces were crafted from solid copper sheet metal using hand-hammering and repousse work. Repousse involves hammering designs into relief from the reverse side, followed by chasing details onto the front surface to refine textures such as fish scales, waves, and sea vegetation.

Authentic pieces frequently bear an impressed NEWLYN mark stamped in capital letters. Look for characteristic Cornish marine motifssuch as fish, crabs, sea kelp, and luggersalongside a distinctive spot-hammered ground and visible hand-crafting tool marks.

Position the tray on an entry console table to hold keys or small accessories, or present it flat on a coffee table or bookshelf. The warm metallic tones complement minimalist, industrial, and heritage decor schemes.

Dust regularly with a dry, soft microfiber cloth to prevent dirt accumulation. Avoid harsh chemical polishes or abrasive scrubbers that remove natural surface oxidisation; gentle buffing with specialized metal wax preserves the historical patina.
