This Victorian Rococo Revival jardiniere takes the form of a serpentine planter crafted from warm brown burr walnut with marquetry inlay across the lid and ornate ormolu mounts to the corners. The piece stands on slender cabriole legs with carved detail and includes a lift off lid fitted with small metal handles. Visible signs of age and wear appear across the polished timber surfaces and the decorative mounts. Measuring 76 cm high, 74 cm wide, and 48 cm deep, the table sits at a convenient height for standing display in a living room, hallway, or bay window. Position the planter in a prominent living space to hold potted plants or floral arrangements, where the rich wood grain and French chateau design vibe complement traditional or eclectic interior settings.

FAQs

A jardiniere or planter table is an ornamental piece of furniture designed to display indoor plants or floral arrangements, popular throughout 19th-century European decorative arts.

These items often feature burr walnut veneers over softwood cores, intricate floral marquetry inlays, metal inner liners, and cast brass or ormolu mounts.

Authentic pieces display hand-cut joinery, aged patina on timber veneers, heavy cast metal mounts with hand-chased detailing, and original zinc or tin drop-in liners.

Place the piece in an entryway or window alcove, utilizing the removable lid to convert it between a closed side table and an open planter for indoor greenery.

Keep the wood away from direct heat sources, apply natural beeswax polish periodically along the grain, and ensure plants remain inside waterproof liners to protect the veneer.
