Fine Quality Late 19thcentury Anglo Indian Hoshiarpur Inlaid Octagonal Occasional Table

19th century
Description

A fine quality late 19th century Anglo Indian ivory and ebony inlaid hardwood octagonal occasional table with good original patina, probably from the Hoshiarpur area in the Punjab, this area renowned for their superb intricate inlay work.

This table consists of an octagonal top with central inlaid ebony and ivory chess or games board surrounded by inlaid quatrefoil decoration with floral and foliate inlaid designs with ebony and ivory stringing, further floral and foliate and inlaid quatrefoil decoration, ebony and ivory stringing and outer inlaid quatrefoil design with a moulded edge of ebony and ivory chevron design.

This leads down to an eight sided folding base of Moorish influence, each side having rectangular panels to the top with inlaid ivory quatrefoils with ebony and ivory chevron borders, the lower section of arcaded design also with inlaid foliate and ebony and ivory chevron decoration.

Although the base is folding, once the top is placed into position the table becomes stable for use.

The Moorish style of furniture was very popular in Europe during the latter part of the 19th century with many areas in India producing similar items of superb quality, similar tables were sold by Liberty of London during the later 19th century.

Reference: Similar tables and inlaid items can be found in the book ‘Furniture From British India an Ceylon’ by Amin Jaffer pager 285 – 293.

This decorative table is in very good condition for age, is of stable construction and can go straight into a home.

Please note: This table has an ivory exemption certificate as it contains less than 10% ivory and therefore is legally exempt from the trade ban and can therefore be sold with this certificate – if you were to purchase this table and then wished to sell it in the future you would need to apply for an exemption certificate at a cost of £20.00 (correct at today’s date July 2026).

Registered as exempt under the Ivory Act 2018

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Crafted in the Punjab region during the late Victorian era, Hoshiarpur furniture is characterised by dense geometric ivory or bone inlay set into dark hardwoods, blending native Indian floral motifs with Western functional forms.

These tables typically feature solid dense hardwoods such as shisham or rosewood, intricately inlaid with camel bone, ivory, or mother-of-pearl, and often designed with folding or interlocking bases.

Authentic pieces feature hand-cut bone or ivory inlay panels with slight variations, pegged joinery, and natural hand-carved details along the legs and apron arches.

The geometric inlay pattern acts as a focal accent piece, pairing effectively beside modern upholstered sofas, within reading nooks, or in eclectic living spaces.

Maintain a stable humidity level to prevent the wood from expanding and loosening the inlay, clean gently with a dry soft cloth, and avoid moisture or harsh chemical cleaners.
