This 19th-century Anglo-Indian Hoshiapur occasional table takes an octagonal form and comes in a medium brown hardwood with a slightly faded light honey colour and white bone inlay. Dense floral and geometric bone inlay covers the entire top surface, accented by floral vine borders, a central bone inlay rosette, and a circular medallion pattern. Each hinged side panel displays a shaped inlaid myriad with barber's pole decoration, sitting above Mughal arches and slender uprights. The piece measures 41 cm high, 41 cm wide, and 41 cm deep, offering a compact footprint suited for a gentleman's library or placement at the end of a sofa. The table stands on straight legs with integrated lower stretchers, displaying visible natural grain variation in the timber alongside intricate surface embellishments.

Hoshiarpur furniture originates from the Punjab region of India, gaining prominence during the late nineteenth century for intricate wood inlay craftsmanship. Created primarily for export and the British colonial market, these pieces combine traditional Islamic geometric motifs with European furniture forms.

These tables are typically constructed from dense native hardwoods such as teak, shisham, or rosewood. The decorative surfaces feature contrasting intricate inlays made from camel bone, mother-of-pearl, or ivory framed by dark stringing lines.

Authentic period examples demonstrate hand-cut inlay pieces fitted individually into carved recesses rather than modern surface resin pours. They often feature folding or panelled octagonal bases with arched cutouts and evidence of traditional joinery techniques on the undersides.

An octagonal inlaid table works effectively as an accent piece beside structured armchairs or within a reading corner. The detailed geometric patterns provide textural contrast when placed against plain walls or minimalist modern upholstered seating.

Dust the surface regularly with a soft, dry lint-free cloth, avoiding chemical polishes or water which can loosen delicate inlay glue. Maintain a stable indoor humidity level to prevent the hardwood base from expanding or contracting.
