Large Fine Quality Late 19th Century Anglo Indian Hoshiarpur Inlaid Octagonal Occasional Table

1900 - 1920
Description

A large fine quality late 19th century (circa 1900) Anglo Indian brass and copper inlaid hardwood octagonal occasional table with good original patina, from the Hoshiarpur area in the Punjab, this area renowned for their superb intricate inlay work.

This table is unusual with the inlaid brass, copper and ebony top combined with a base consisting of pinjra work.

This table consists of an octagonal top with central circular inlaid brass and copper foliate decoration with ebony stringing with further inlaid floral design and outer ebony stringing. This leads out to brass and copper inlaid floral and crown designs with ebony stringing, inlaid floral and foliate border with ebony stringing with a moulded edge of inlaid brass and copper design.

This leads down to an eight sided folding base, each side having rectangular panels to the top consisting of ‘pinjra’ work (meaning birdcage) which is geometric latticework, typically a design from Lahore, each panel surrounded by inlaid brass quatrefoils, the lower section with carved and pierced foliate cusp arches with carved and pierced foliate decoration below, the legs with inlaid brass quatrefoil design, the underside of the top with makers label ‘Hoshiarpur, Punjab’.

Although the base is folding, once the top is placed into position the table becomes stable for use.

This style of furniture was very popular in Europe during the late 19th and early 20th centuries with many areas in India producing similar items of superb quality, similar tables were sold by Liberty of London during this time.

Reference: An almost identical table can be found in the book ‘Furniture From British India an Ceylon’ by Amin Jaffer page 293, also other similar inlaid items can be found on and pages 285 – 293.

On page 293 in the description of this similar table it appears that the marriage of a marquetry inlaid top is unusual with the pinjra work to the base, the pinjra work typically a design from Lahore but this table is clearly from Hoshiarpur as the makers label states.

This highly decorative table is in very good condition for age, is of stable construction and can go straight into a home.

This large late 19th-century Anglo-Indian occasional table originates from the Hoshiarpur area of the Punjab, constructed from rosewood and hardwood with a warm brown finish. The octagonal top displays a central circular brass and copper foliate decoration alongside ebony stringing, floral patterns, and a moulded edge, sitting above an eight-sided folding base. The upper section of the base incorporates geometric pinjra lattice panels surrounded by brass quatrefoils, while the lower section features carved and pierced foliate cusp arches and intricate lower fretwork. A maker label reads Hoshiarpur, Punjab on the underside of the top, and the piece shows a good original patina across its inlaid surfaces. Measuring 60.5 cm high, 61 cm wide, and 61 cm deep, this stable table functions well at the end of a sofa in a gentleman's library or living room.

Originating in the Punjab region of India during the late nineteenth century, Hoshiarpur furniture represents a fusion of traditional Indian craftsmanship and Western Victorian forms. Local artisans produced intricate wooden furniture adorned with detailed bone, ivory, or brass inlay, designed primarily for the British colonial export market.

Hoshiarpur craftsmen predominantly utilised native dense hardwoods such as shisham or rosewood for the structural framework. Decorative surface patterns were achieved by precision-cutting and embedding bone, ivory, brass, or copper directly into carved recesses, complemented by carved jali lattice screens.

Authentic nineteenth-century examples display hand-cut inlay elements set flush into dark native timber with a natural age patina. Structural joinery, hand-carved fretwork with subtle hand-tooling marks, and uniform surface wear distinguish historic craftsmanship from modern machine-made reproductions.

An inlaid octagonal table serves as an accent piece in contemporary living spaces, providing textural interest alongside neutral upholstery or modern furniture. Positioned beside an armchair, in an alcove, or within a reading space, its detailed geometry enhances eclectic, Victorian, or worldly interior schemes.

Dust the surface regularly with a dry, soft lint-free cloth, avoiding liquid polishes or harsh chemical detergents that might loosen delicate inlay glue. Maintain a stable indoor humidity level to prevent the hardwood from swelling or shrinking, which can cause inlay pieces to dislodge over time.
