Urbino became a major centre for Italian maiolica production during the 16th century Renaissance, famous for pioneering the istoriato style. This technique transformed ceramic surface decoration by painting detailed narrative scenes, often drawn from classical mythology or biblical stories, across the entire face of the vessel.

Maiolica is crafted from earthenware clay coated with an opaque white tin glaze. Artisans painted directly onto the unburnt, dry tin glaze using metallic oxide pigments before firing the piece a second time to fuse the glazes and create vibrant colours.

Authentic style indicators include full-coverage istoriato figurative painting, an opaque milky-white tin glaze undersurface, minor firing imperfections or glaze pops, and hand-applied mineral pigments such as cobalt blue, antimony yellow, and copper green.
