Imari porcelain originates from the Arita region in Japan and was exported via the port of Imari from the seventeenth century onwards. It is characterised by complex underglaze cobalt blue patterns complemented by overglaze iron-red and gold enamels, designed for both domestic use and Western trade.

Traditional Imari ceramics are crafted from white porcelain clay fired at high temperatures. The surface decoration involves underglaze cobalt blue oxide combined with overglaze mineral enamels, particularly iron-red, green, and gilding.

Authentic pieces feature signs of hand-painted brushwork, slight variations in glaze thickness, and occasionally spur marks on the underside from kiln supports. The colour palette traditionally relies heavily on cobalt blue, iron-red, and faint traces of historical gilded highlights.

An Imari bowl is frequently placed on a sideboard top, coffee table, or within an open display cabinet to add colour and texture. The vibrant red and blue hues contrast effectively against modern muted tones and polished timber surfaces.
