Large Antique Japanese Imari Porcelain Scallop Edge Bowl

Description

A beautiful Japanese Imari porcelain bowl with a scalloped rim and lovely vibrant designs. Inside there is a fan type pattern radiating out from a central flower, with panels decorated with floral designs in shades of red, green and blue. The exterior of the bowl has a repeated floral design in blue and red. The bowl is a generous size and dates from the second half of the 19th century.

This is almost a bowl of two halves - the interior design and exterior design are very different from each other whilst sitting together beautifully. Personally I like the outside best, though the little flower panels on the interior are rather lovely.

Condition: There is a chip to the rim with a hairline crack running down into the bowl. There are a couple of very small hairline cracks starting in the low points of the scalloped rim. The glaze has a few irregularities/flaws.

Imari porcelain originates from the Arita region in Japan, named after the port of Imari from which it was exported. It is characterised by its distinctive palette of underglaze cobalt blue combined with overglaze iron-red enamel and gold accents, often featuring intricate floral and diaper patterns.

Imari pieces are crafted from fine kaolin porcelain clay, fired at high temperatures for strength and glass-like vitrification. The designs are created using initial underglaze blue brushwork followed by secondary firings for hand-applied overglaze iron-red and polychrome enamels.

Authentic pieces typically feature hand-painted variations in line weight, subtle glaze surface irregularites, and unglazed foot rims showing greyish-white porcelain paste.
