FAQs

Imari porcelain refers to Japanese export ceramics produced in the Arita area of Hizen province and exported from the port of Imari. It gained international recognition from the seventeenth century onwards, characterised by underglaze cobalt blue combined with overglaze iron red enameling.

Traditional Imari ceramics are crafted from kaolin clay fired at high temperatures to create hard-paste porcelain. The characteristic decoration involves firing the cobalt blue underglaze first, followed by secondary firings for the overglaze enamels and gilding.

Authentic Imari pieces typically feature a palette of underglaze cobalt blue and rust-red enamels, minor glaze dark spots, spur marks on the base from kiln support, and detailed hand-painted panel decorations.

These decorative ceramics can be displayed on dark wood sideboards, arranged within curated bookshelf vignettes, or positioned on entry console tables to introduce historic pattern and contrasting colour.

Clean porcelain gentle by hand using warm water and mild detergent, avoiding abrasive sponges or chemical solvents that could wear away overglaze enamelling. Dry thoroughly with a soft microfibre cloth.
