Quartetto Nest of Four Early 20th Century Walnut Coffee Tables

1900 - 1920
Description

An Extremely Good Quality And Very Attractive Quartetto Nest Of Four Walnut Coffee Tables, Dating To The Early 20th Century, Having Superbly Figured Panel Tops, With Wide Crossband And Herringbone Banded Decoration, Raised On Very Elegant Spiral Twist Turned Upright Supports And Curved Cross Stretchers, Terminating On Original Sabre Feet.

Makers Stamp To Underside - Gill & Reigate, London.

Gill & Reigate were a respected English furniture-making and decorating firm active during the late 19th and early 20th centuries, best known for producing high-quality antique and reproduction furniture in the Georgian and Regency taste. The company earned a strong reputation for fine craftsmanship, elegant proportions, and the use of quality timbers and decorative finishes, often supplying fashionable homes and country houses during the Edwardian period. Pieces bearing the Gill & Reigate label are now sought after by collectors and dealers for their refined interpretation of earlier English styles, combining traditional cabinet-making techniques with the practicality and taste demanded by their contemporary clientele.

Dating to the early 2oth century, these tables are very good quality, incredibly elegant and extremely useful indeed.

The top of each table is constructed from superbly figured, rich walnut timbers with elegant cross banded decoration and some extremely unusual herringbone banding, which is a feature more commonly found on Queen Anne period walnut items of furniture. The combination of these features creates a really lovely and decorative top to each table.

The tables are in good, solid, functional condition, with very little restoration or existing damage to speak of. It is worth noting that we have had many similar nests of this period and it’s not that often that they are found without rudimentary repairs to smashed legs, or with tops that have faded to totally different colour, split, or just generally look different. Its therefore clear that this particular nest has been well loved, cherished and used throughout its life.

As with all items which we offer for sale they have been attended to in our workshops by our highly skilled antique furniture restorers who have tightened the joints, cleaned and naturally waxed them to ensure they are presented in retail condition and ready to be placed straight into use.

Perfect for a whole variety of spaces around the home they will add a touch of elegance, class and function to absolutely any room around the home.

Archival Detail
Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A quartetto nest of tables consists of a set of four graduated occasional tables designed to fit neatly beneath one another when not in use. Popularised during the 18th and 19th centuries, they offer compact, space-saving surface area for entertaining.

These pieces are typically constructed from dense hardwoods such as walnut, mahogany, or oak. Common structural features include spiral-turned or barley twist legs, mortise-and-tenon joinery, arched stretchers, and inlaid wood tops.

Authentic examples often display graduated hand-cut runner grooves on the underside, signs of natural wood shrinkage along grain lines, and uneven wear on the trestle feet consistent with age.

A quartetto set can be placed at the end of a sofa as a compact single unit or separated during gatherings to serve as individual side tables across a living room.

Clean surfaces regularly with a soft dry cloth and apply a high-quality beeswax polish twice a year to preserve the wood finish. Avoid placing the tables near direct heat sources or in direct sunlight to prevent timber movement and fading.
