This George IV needlework alphabet sampler dates from the Regency period, created in 1825 by Jane Barker at the age of ten. The textile art piece is worked on warm neutral linen fabric using coloured silk threads and is mounted behind glass inside a dark wooden frame with a stepped moulding profile. The embroidery incorporates rows of alphabets and numbers, an inscription, floral urn motifs, potted rose bushes, and a tree. Lightly cleaned and ready to display, the sampler measures 32 cm high, 31 cm wide, and 2.5 cm deep. Suitable for period homes and traditional English country house interiors, the framed textile works well hung on narrow wall spaces, such as between windows, along stairwells, or in a hallway. It also integrates easily into study rooms, bedrooms, or sitting rooms alongside other antique artworks and framed documents.

An antique needlework sampler is an embroidered textile panel created primarily by young students to demonstrate proficiency in stitching techniques, typography, and pattern creation during the 18th and 19th centuries.

Historically, samplers were hand-stitched onto woven linen or wool canvases using silk, wool, or cotton thread dyed with natural colourants.

Authentic pieces from the George IV era typically feature hand-spun linen substrates, hand-stitched typography, period-specific decorative motifs such as stylized trees or floral urns, and often include an embroidered name, age, and date.

A framed sampler can be displayed as a solitary feature on a narrow wall space, integrated into a gallery wall alongside period portraiture, or placed above a timber sideboard to enhance a traditional decorative scheme.

To preserve historic needlework, mount the panel behind UV-filtering protective glass using acid-free archival backing materials, and avoid displaying the object in direct sunlight or high-humidity environments.
