The Mask, a Hand Painted and Silk Needlework Picture, English Circa 1830

This fine quality and outstanding 19th century hand painted picture with fine hand stitching using the best quality silk was taken from the famous print by Luigi Schiavonetti after Joshua Reynolds, entitled "The Mask" in 1790. The original print is held at the British Museum. (see picture)

It depicts a portrait of Ladies Charlotte and Anne Spencer after Reynolds (figures taken from Mannings 1674); both three-quarters length, Charlotte bending to the left, head turned to face the front, holding a bearded mask up before her sister, who stands to the right with her arms behind her and wearing a large ribbon at her waist with a curtain behind

It retains its original gilt wood frame with its black and gilt reverse painted glass mount. The condition is excellent, showing its true colours, which have not faded in the sunlight like so many others.
