This Victorian walking cane originates from France and dates to 1860. The piece pairs a silver-plated handle with a long black ebonised shaft and a plain metal collar joining the two sections together. The decorative top exhibits a rounded lobed shape with spiral gadrooning, featuring twisted fluted grooves running down the metal surface. The slender wooden rod tapers gradually from the top mount down to a flat tip at the opposite end. Measuring 94 cm high by 5 cm wide and 5 cm deep, the item functions as a stylish accessory for daily walks or outings. Placed beside the front door in a hallway or stored inside a gentleman's library, the cane offers both practical support and a distinctive decorative accent for a period interior. Collectors of antique canes and traditional walking sticks will find this accessory suits everyday display or practical use within the home.

During the Victorian and late nineteenth-century eras, walking sticks evolved from defensive weapons into essential fashion accessories for gentlemen, signifying social standing and formal etiquette.

Shafts were commonly turned from hard woods such as ebonised fruitwood, malacca, or bamboo, while handles featured decorative silver plate, sterling silver, porcelain, or carved horn.

Authentic period canes typically exhibit appropriate wear to the base tip, authentic maker or maker-style silver stamps on collars or pommels, and natural surface patination on metal and wood components.

Walking canes are effectively displayed grouped inside a vintage umbrella stand or mounted on wall-bracket holders within entryways, hallways, or study spaces.

Clean gently using a soft, dry microfibre cloth, applying non-abrasive silver polish sparingly only when necessary to prevent wearing down thin electroplated silver layers.
