Gothic Revival Carved Oak Lectern Stand

1900 - 1920
Description

A carved oak lectern of Gothic Revival taste, the rectangular book rest set at a fixed reading angle with a moulded lip to the lower edge, designed to support an open volume. The top is raised on a well-articulated stem composed of clustered columnar elements with ring turning, leading down to a robust, cruciform base. The supporting structure beneath the rest is formed from shaped brackets with characteristic trefoil piercings, echoing medieval ecclesiastical tracery and lending the piece a strong architectural quality.

The timber displays a rich, warm brown patina with visible grain throughout, complementing the crispness of the carved details. The base terminates in four splayed feet with further cut-out decoration,

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Gothic Revival furniture draws inspiration from medieval architecture, featuring elements such as pointed arches, carved trefoils, tracery, and solid oak construction popularised during the nineteenth century.

Antique lecterns were predominantly constructed using dense hardwoods such as oak or walnut, often featuring mortise and tenon joinery alongside hand-carved architectural details.

Authentic pieces typically exhibit signs of hand-tooling, original patination in recessed carvings, construction methods like peg joinery, and structural wear consistent with historical use.

A carved lectern can serve as an architectural focal point in an entryway displaying a large guestbook, or in a home library to hold open art books and manuscripts.

Dust regularly with a soft dry cloth and apply a high-quality beeswax polish annually along the grain to protect the wood finish and prevent drying out.
