This set of twelve rectangular Chinese carved wooden panels dates from the Qing Dynasty period around 1880. Each architectural wall plaque is constructed from wood, lacquer, and gold leaf, finished in rustic red, green, and gold painted colours with original gilding retained on the edge patterns. The double-sided pieces display intricate openwork scrollwork, key fret borders, and dragon motifs, showing carved details, chips, loss of carving, discoloration, shrinkage, and conservation work. Measuring 19 cm high, 45 cm wide, and 3 cm deep, they form a cohesive decorative arrangement. Positioned together on a wall, these wall plaques create a focal point in a dining room or living room, particularly above a sideboard or console table. The dense patterns and layered textures add historical depth and rich visual contrast to neutral interiors. They suit traditional, eclectic, or maximalist schemes where architectural elements from different cultures introduce character and authenticity to living spaces.

Late Qing Dynasty carved wooden panels were created as architectural elements, window grilles, or furniture inserts in China during the late nineteenth century. They typically feature intricate openwork piercing and symbolic carvings representing longevity, prosperity, or natural motifs.

These panels were carved from native timbers such as elm, camphor, or pine, then finished with layers of coloured lacquer, red paint, and gold leaf gilding. Traditional joinery techniques like mortise and tenon were used rather than metal fasteners.

Original nineteenth-century examples display hand-carved irregularities, natural timber shrinkage along the grain, and layered wear to the lacquer or gilding. The reverse side usually shows hand-saw and chisel marks rather than modern machine cuts.

Panels can be mounted as a grid on a feature wall, hung individually as art, or positioned above a console table to add texture and historical contrast to contemporary decor schemes.

Dust carved surfaces gently using a soft, dry artist brush or microfibre cloth, avoiding water and liquid solvents that could lift delicate lacquer or gilding. Keep the timber in a climate-controlled room away from direct heat sources and sunlight.
