Imari porcelain refers to Japanese export ceramics manufactured around the town of Arita in Hizen province, named after the nearby port of Imari from which pieces were shipped internationally starting in the seventeenth century.

Traditional Imari ware is crafted from hard-paste porcelain kaolin clay, decorated with underglaze cobalt blue and combined with overglaze iron-red enamels, gilding, and occasional green highlights.

Authentic pieces feature signs of hand-painted brushwork, slight irregularities in the glaze, spur marks on the base from kiln supports, and a distinctive palette of dark underglaze blue with layered iron-red enameling.
