Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This unusual pair of decorative dishes originates from 1900 in the Japanese Imari style. Each piece comprises a fan-shaped porcelain body finished with a glossy white glaze and hand-painted underglaze blue brushwork depicting intricate peony motifs, rockwork, and butterflies beneath a scalloped rim. Both items are supported on small gold-coloured stands, displaying a rich brown wood-grain surface underneath. Each dish measures 5 cm high, 25 cm wide, and 19 cm deep. Items of this type find an ideal home displayed on a sideboard top within an English Country House interior. They suit placement in a living room, dining room, or hallway to add traditional character and delicate blue and white colour to a surface arrangement. The pair can be placed together or positioned separately to bring a coordinated decorative accent to a room scheme.

FAQs

Fan-shaped porcelain pieces emerged in Japan during the Edo and Meiji periods, inspired by the aesthetic of traditional Japanese folding fans (sensu). Craftsmen used underglaze cobalt blue to depict botanical and natural motifs, creating items meant for both utilitarian food serving and decorative display.

These dishes are produced using high-fired porcelain clay decorated with natural cobalt oxide pigment applied directly to the unfired body. A clear glaze is applied over the decoration before the piece undergoes a high-temperature firing, fusing the pigment beneath the glaze.

Authentic period pieces display hand-applied underglaze brushwork with subtle variations in cobalt intensity and depth. Inspect the underside for spurred kiln marks, slight asymmetry from hand-moulding, and signs of gentle age wear along the unglazed foot rim.

Position fan-shaped dishes on acrylic or brass display stands atop a wooden sideboard, console table, or within an illuminated glass cabinet. They also work effectively mounted as part of a wall plate gallery to add structured geometric interest.

Clean porcelain items using warm water and a mild detergent applied with a soft cloth. Avoid abrasive sponges, chemical solvents, or automatic dishwashers to protect the glazed surface and prevent structural stress.
