Imari porcelain refers to Japanese export ceramics produced in the Arita area of Hizen province, named after the port of Imari from where it was exported to Europe starting in the seventeenth century.

Crafted from white porcelain clay, Imari ware is characterised by underglaze cobalt blue decoration combined with overglaze iron red, gilding, and colourful enamel details applied before secondary firing.

Authentic pieces feature hand-painted panel designs, visible brushstrokes, minor glaze firing imperfections, spur marks on the underside, and traditional dark cobalt blue underglaze markings.

Group varied dish shapes together on a sideboard top, style them as decorative vanity trays, or display them inside glass cabinets to introduce pattern and warm colour into a space.

Hand wash porcelain gently using warm water and mild soap, avoiding abrasive sponges or chemical cleaners that could damage overglaze enamels, and never place in a dishwasher.
