Description

A fine, large and most attractive Pair of Late 19th Century Antique Japanese Meiji Period scallop edged Imari Porcelain Dishes. Softly decorated in a traditional Imari palette of iron red, and cobalt blue, each of the central reserves depicting a vase of flowers. Unsigned, the reverse of each dish sparsely decorated in blue.

FAQs

Imari porcelain originates from the Arita region in Japan and gained international prominence during the Meiji period (18681912). It is recognised by its distinctive palette of underglaze cobalt blue combined with overglaze iron red, subtle gilding, and intricate floral or basket motifs.

Imari ware was crafted using high-fired kaolin clay to produce a durable hard-paste porcelain body. Artisans applied cobalt oxide decoration before the initial glaze firing, followed by detailed overglaze enamel painting and gilding before a second, lower-temperature kiln firing.

Authentic pieces feature slight asymmetrical hand-painted variations, subtle spur marks on the underside from kiln support, and a dense porcelain weight. The underglaze blue displays natural depth alongside characteristic iron-red enamels and minor age-appropriate glaze wear.

These decorative dishes function effectively as wall displays using plate hangers or placed on display stands on a sideboard top or bookshelf. The contrasting red and cobalt tones provide a graphic accent against neutral walls or timber furniture.

Clean using lukewarm water and a mild detergent with a soft, non-abrasive cloth. Avoid submerging items if glaze crazing is visible, and never place historic porcelain in a dishwasher or use chemical cleaners, which degrade delicate overglaze enamels.
