This pair of antique Japanese Imari small plates dates to 1890 and belongs to the Japanese Imari decorative dish category. The items are formed from white porcelain decorated with underglaze cobalt blue glaze, displaying scalloped rims, hand-painted central kirin motifs, and detailed geometric borders. The image displays the rich blue and white tones of the glaze, the scalloped edges of the rims, and the small metallic stands supporting each piece. Each dish measures 2.5 cm high, 18 cm wide, and 18 cm deep. These pieces suit placement on a sideboard top within an English country house interior scheme. They function well as decorative dishes displayed on surfaces in a living room, dining room, or hallway to add traditional blue and white porcelain accents to home decor.

Japanese Imari porcelain, named after the port town of Imari from which it was exported, refers to high-fired ceramics produced in the Arita region. Blue and white variants rely on underglaze cobalt oxide painted onto raw clay before glazing and firing at high temperatures.

Traditional Imari ceramics are crafted from crushed china stone mixed with clay to produce a hard, white porcelain body. The decorative elements are hand-painted using cobalt blue underglaze before a translucent glaze is applied over the top and fired.

Authentic pieces generally display subtle surface irregularities, hand-painted variation in cobalt intensity, visible spur marks on the base, and characteristic rim shaping such as scalloped or foliate edges.

These pieces can be arranged in small symmetrical groupings on wall brackets, elevated on stands on a sideboard top, or integrated into modern shelving alongside contemporary ceramics.

Clean gently by hand using lukewarm water and a mild non-abrasive soap, avoiding prolonged soaking or harsh chemical detergents. Store safely away from high-traffic vibration and do not clean in modern automatic dishwashers.
