Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Imari porcelain originates from the Arita region in Japan and was named after the port of Imari from which it was exported. Meiji period (18681912) Imari ware is characterised by its distinctive underglaze cobalt blue paired with overglaze iron-red and gilded ornamentation, produced for both domestic use and international markets.

Imari porcelain is crafted from fine kaolin clay fired at high temperatures to produce a durable hard-paste ceramic body. The decoration involves a multi-stage process featuring underglaze cobalt blue painted onto raw ceramic, followed by glaze firing, overglaze enamel application in iron-red tones, and hand-applied gilded highlights.

Authentic Imari pieces display a characteristic colour palette combining cobalt blue, iron-red, and gold gilding on fine porcelain. Look for signs of hand-painted variations in line weight, subtle surface wear or oxidisation on elevated gilding, and minor potting irregularities consistent with historic kiln firings.

An antique Imari dish can be displayed on a plate stand atop a sideboard, mounted within a shadow box frame, or integrated into a decorative wall grouping. Its vivid blue and red palette offers a striking visual contrast against minimalist, modern timber or stone surfaces.

Clean porcelain gently using a soft microfibre cloth moistened with lukewarm water and mild dish soap. Avoid submerging pieces with delicate overglaze gilding, do not use abrasive sponges, and keep away from automated dishwashers to prevent surface wear.
