Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE 1860s:
Book-matched burr walnut top: decorative veneering popular in the mid to late 1800s.
Wide crossbanded outer border: hand-laid veneers cut to fit the undulating serpentine edge.
Gilt brass shoulder mounts and foot sabots: French rococo revival salon taste.
Darkened recesses across the cast mounts: natural oxidisation built up over decades.

This is an independent date report produced by Sellingantiques using its own proprietary system. The process uses the photographs shown on this page. The system is never told the date the dealer has declared. This report shows that the two dates corroborate.

Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This Victorian centre table follows a French Louis XV Revival style, dating from 1860. The piece uses warm brown burr walnut timber with a crossbanded border on the serpentine top, alongside ormolu and brass mounts, a moulded edge, a single frieze drawer with an ornate handle, and four shaped cabriole legs. The table stands 73 cm high, 82 cm wide, and 55 cm deep. In a modern interior, this freestanding table works well as a statement piece in the centre of a foyer, living room, or study, providing a surface for lamps, books, or decorative objects while functioning as a functional accent item against panelled walls.

FAQs

French Louis XV Revival centre tables are defined by fluid serpentine profiles, slender cabriole legs, and extensive decorative veneering such as burr walnut or marquetry. Popularised in the nineteenth century, these pieces feature ornate gilded bronze or brass mounts along the aprons and knees, designed to be viewed from all angles within a room.

These tables were typically constructed with a solid hardwood core, such as oak or pine, covered in figured veneers like burr walnut, kingwood, or rosewood. The decorative metal fittings were cast in bronze or brass, frequently chased and gilded (ormolu), while drawer linings were crafted from solid oak or mahogany.

Authentic nineteenth-century pieces display hand-cut dovetail joints on drawers, slight irregularities in hand-planed underside surfaces, and substantial weight from the hardwood core. The metal mounts often show natural tarnish, casting marks, and original threaded bolt fixings on the reverse rather than modern uniform screws.

A burr walnut centre table functions effectively as a focal point in a central hall or entryway, or as a freestanding accent table behind a sofa. Its detailed wood grain and metallic accents contrast well against modern minimalist backdrops, painted panelling, or neutral upholstery.

Maintain the finish by dusting regularly with a dry, lint-free microfibre cloth and applying a clear beeswax polish once or twice a year in the direction of the grain. Avoid placement near direct heat sources, radiators, or direct sunlight to prevent veneer cracking, lifting, or sun bleaching.
