Victorian Taxidermy- Pair of Snow Buntings in Flat Sided Dome. Circa 1875

19th century
Description

The birds modelled amongst snow covered ground work, look closely and you will see a small crevice or scrape with three hanging (glass) icicles to the left-hand side, plus a small drainage pipe is poking out of the ground work to the right-hand side, with a realistic (glass) frozen trickle of water hanging from it. One bird is perched the other suspended in flight. In all a magical case, complete with its original four-sided glass dome. The square format dome or shade as they were often referred to, being a more expensive option, opposed to the arched dome which was more commonly used amongst Victorian taxidermist. The ebonised base complete with four small bun feet. Unlabelled, but very much in the style of Cole of Norwich (1838 -1906) one of the three main Norfolk taxidermists of the period.

Provenance: Purchased directly by ourselves from a deceased estate in Norfolk where it has stood shielded from the light for the past fifty or so years at least.

Height 57cm, Width 30cm, Depth 24cm

The snow bunting (Plectrophenax nivalis) breeds further north than any other small bird in the world. It is an Arctic specialist, with a circumpolar Arctic breeding range throughout the northern hemisphere. Predominantly a winter visitor to Britain & Ireland although a tiny breeding population remains amongst snow fields on the highest Scottish mountains.

This Victorian taxidermy piece features a pair of snow buntings housed beneath a flat-sided glass dome with an arched top, set upon an ebonised wooden base supported by four small bun feet. The specimens display white and black plumage amidst snow-covered flora groundwork, complemented by painted white branches, three glass icicles, and a small drainage pipe with a frozen glass water trickle. The construction includes naturalistic elements such as dried grasses and a rocky crevice, presenting a dual specimen mount of a perched bird and another suspended in flight. The object measures 57 cm high, 30 cm wide, and 24 cm deep. Appropriate for placement on a mantelpiece in a study or living area, the display brings a touch of Victorian Highland Hunting Lodge style to an interior. The composition provides an educational window into natural history, referencing Arctic bird species that visit Britain and Ireland during winter. The unlabelled presentation reflects the traditional craftsmanship of the period, well suited for collectors of natural curiosities seeking an atmospheric conversation piece.

During the Victorian era, interest in natural history led to widespread mounting of bird specimens inside glass domes to protect them from environmental damage and dust. These displays served as both educational specimens and decorative showpieces in 19th-century homes.

Victorian taxidermy domes typically consist of mouth-blown glass mounted onto turned ebonised wood or mahogany bases. The internal groundwork was built using papier-mache, dried flora, lichen, and fine wire structures.

Authentic pieces feature period glass domes with minor imperfections or air bubbles, aged ebonised wooden bases with visible wear beneath, and hand-bound wire internal supports rather than modern synthetic materials.

Taxidermy domes are often styled on mantelpieces, sideboards, or within book alcoves alongside antique leather-bound books and brass decorative objects to create a curated cabinet of curiosities aesthetic.

Keep the dome away from direct sunlight and damp conditions to prevent plumage fading and deterioration. The glass cover should be dusted gently with a soft cloth, keeping the base seal intact.
