Description

A very nice pair of mid 17thc Flemish carved oak Caryatids, which would have been originally applied to an impressive piece of furniture or panelling, I always say I would have loved to have seen the piece it would have been applied to....what makes these two special, is that they are playing musical instruments of the period...a drum and what looks like a tambourine...excellent natural colour and condition.

Flemish C1640-60.

Flemish caryatids from the 17th century are architectural support figures heavily influenced by Renaissance and Baroque design traditions, frequently integrated into high-status furniture, panelling, and mantelpieces in the Low Countries.

These pieces are typically hand-carved from solid European oak using traditional gouges and chisels, often featuring pegged joinery or structural mounting points designed to bear weight or ornament architectural joinery.

Authenticity is determined by examining tool marks left by hand chisels, natural oxidisation and shrinkage of the timber over centuries, hand-cut joinery, and the distinct patina and grain pattern characteristic of old-growth European oak.

These sculptural elements are often mounted on bespoke metal display stands or incorporated into architectural wall displays to introduce historical texture, depth, and scholarly character into contemporary or traditional spaces.

Preservation requires maintaining stable indoor humidity levels between 45% and 55%, avoiding direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent wood splitting, and dusting gently with a dry, soft cloth without applying modern liquid polishes or waxes.
