Regency Papier Mache Tray on Stand

19th century
Description

A Good Quality Regency Period Oblong Papier Mache Tray With Very Attractive Hand Painted And Gilded Decoration Raised On Elegant Later Faux Bamboo Design Stand.

What better way to look after the environment than to recycle beautiful, old, antique objects with little purpose in the modern world and give them a new purpose.

Thats exactly what’s happened to this pretty little Papier Mache tray. It is now an attractive and functional coffee table or even just side table, with the added bonus that the tray is still removable and can therefore be used as an actual tray for carrying things around on when required.

This particular tray is a nice small size which is big enough to be practical but not so big it would overpower anything else in a room. It is also in largely excellent condition with just some minor old marks, scratches, scuffs and dents that can be expected on an object of this age which has been used significantly throughout the many years of its life.

The tray table is in good, clean condition and ready to go straight into use having been attended to in our workshops by our trained antique furniture restorers before being offered for sale by us.

Height – 19.25in.

Width – 26in.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Popularised during the late 18th and early 19th centuries, Regency papier-mache tray tables feature dense pressed-paper traysoften finished with ebonised lacquer and gilt decorationmounted onto fixed or folding timber bases.

They were constructed by layering paper soaked in glue or paste over moulds, baking the form, saturating it with linseed oil, and applying coats of dark varnish before hand-painting or gilding the surface.

Authentic period pieces feature dense, heavy pressed-paper construction rather than light modern card, exhibiting micro-craquelure in the varnish, subtle surface unevenness, and period-correct joinery on the supporting timber stand.

Position the piece as an occasional side table beside a armchair or sofa, allowing its dark ebonised finish and delicate gilt detail to contrast against modern textured fabrics.

Dust the surface lightly with a dry, soft microfibre cloth, keeping the item away from direct sunlight, damp environments, heat sources, and chemical polishes that can degrade the lacquer.
