Victorian cartography was characterised by advancements in lithography and steel engraving, allowing for detailed, hand-tinted maps that documented the rapid expansion of cities during the 19th century.

These pieces typically feature hand-laid cotton or rag paper, often with watercolour or lithographic tinting, housed within period timber frames and protected by early glass.

Authenticity is identified through paper ageing characteristics, plate impressions, typography typical of the era, and original framing techniques rather than modern reproductions.

An antique map serves as a sophisticated focal point when hung against dark or neutral walls, pairing well with traditional or transitional decor to add historical depth.

Preservation requires keeping the item out of direct sunlight to prevent fading, maintaining stable humidity levels, and ensuring conservation-grade backing materials are used within the frame.
