Khamseh Saddlebag

19th century
Description

I have owned a couple of these pieces before and I will always buy them as I love their palette and shiny wool. The central white cross sits on a sublime green background which is common to these bags. I love the drawing of the border and how it contracts at top and bottom. Note the narrow yellow and brown running dog borders which frame the rug. I see the top borders running in different directions whereas all of the others run the same way. A mistake or just part of the random approach to weaving? we see this in the field with some motifs half finished as they bump into others. A beautiful little tribal bagface with bright colours.

Some wear and small nibble in one corner.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Khamseh saddlebag face, or khorjin face, is a hand-woven textile panel originally created by nomadic tribes of the Khamseh Confederacy in southwestern Persia. These woven bags were designed to drape across pack animals for transporting belongings during seasonal migrations.

Tribal saddlebags were constructed using hand-spun sheep wool for both the warp, weft, and knotted pile. Naturally derived vegetable and mineral dyes were utilized to achieve rich hues of indigo, madder red, ochre, and dark brown, woven entirely by hand on portable ground looms.

Authentic Khamseh pieces feature soft hand-spun wool, natural dye variation known as abrash, and distinct tribal iconography such as stylised birds, geometric stars, and latch-hook medallions. Additionally, complete saddlebag fronts retain structural closure slits along the lower woven edge.

A woven bag face can be mounted and framed as textile wall art, repurposed into a decorative floor cushion, or laid flat on a console table or bench to introduce geometric pattern and texture into an interior scheme.

Preserve antique wool textiles by keeping them out of direct sunlight to prevent dye fading. Vacuum gently using suction only without a rotating brush bar, and clean spills immediately with cold water and a neutral detergent, seeking professional specialist cleaning when necessary.
