Folding screens gained significant popularity during the late nineteenth century Arts and Crafts movement, inspired by East Asian paravents. Designers favoured naturalistic motifs, detailed textiles, and functional craftsmanship to create decorative room partitions.

Traditional room dividers were constructed using timber inner frames covered with stretched canvas, cotton, or linen textiles. Metal double-acting hinges, often made of brass or iron, connected the individual panels to allow two-way folding.
