Wine coolers, often referred to as cellarettes or cisterns, originated in the late 17th century and became essential dining room accessories during the Georgian and Regency periods for chilling wine bottles in ice before serving.

Authentic period pieces were typically constructed from dense hardwoods like solid mahogany, often featuring flame mahogany veneers, hand-cut dovetail joints, and internal lead or zinc linings designed to hold ice and water safely.

Authentication involves examining the timber shrinkage, hand-cut joinery, patination of the wood, the presence of original metal or lead linings, and construction markers consistent with cabinet-making techniques of the period.

Such pieces can be repurposed creatively as floor-standing planters for large indoor foliage, used for log storage beside a fireplace, or displayed functionally as a drinks holder in a dining or living space.

Preservation requires maintaining stable room humidity away from direct heat sources, applying occasional microcrystalline wax to nourish the wood, and avoiding harsh chemical cleaners to protect the historic polish.
