FAQs

A vigneron table, or wine tasting table, originates from 19th-century French vineyards where cellarmen required space-saving furniture. Featuring a hinged top that folds vertically, these tables were stored against cellar walls when not in use during wine production and brought out for tastings.

These tables were typically crafted from sturdy hardwoods native to France, such as oak, chestnut, or fruitwood, to withstand damp wine cellar environments. Construction featured thick planked tops, mortise-and-tenon joints, and simple wooden or iron pivoting mechanisms.

Authentic examples exhibit hand-carved tilt mechanisms, iron or timber securing pins, and signs of historical wear on the underside. Look for hand-planed planks, forged iron hardware, and natural timber shrinkage along the joints of the tabletop.

Position a vigneron table in a dining area or kitchen nook to add historic character and functional flexibility. The top can be tilted upright against a wall as a decorative timber feature when additional floor space is required.

Clean the surface regularly with a dry, soft cloth, avoiding harsh chemical sprays that strip the aged finish. Apply a coat of natural beeswax polish annually to nourish the wood and maintain stability across changing humidity levels.
