Gillers Antiques Ltd has dated this Wedgwood Orange Lustre Bowl to the 1920s.
The bowl bears the Portland vase mark on the bottom, alongside pattern number Z 4825, confirming its authenticity and rarity. The exterior has a rich mottled orange lustre with gilt dragons and a gilded edge and base. The interior is finished in an exquisite blue mottled glaze, adorned with gold patterns along the rim and a central dragon design. Such a striking combination of colors was used only on rare occasions, making this an exceptional find. Daisy Makeig-Jones was an influential and innovative designer for Wedgwood, best known for her Fairyland Lustre series. She expertly combined underglaze coloring, overglaze graining, iridescence, and gilded details, creating a distinctive and highly sought-after style in ceramics.
The First Ten Lustre Ranges, numbered consecutively from Z4823 to Z4832, consisted of ten different patterns, each with unique combinations of lustre colors. Our bowl corresponds to No. 3 in this Lustre Range, with pattern Z 4825. Notably, orange was said to be Daisy’s favorite lustre color. Produced between 1914 and 1929, this series is now highly collectible, with interest and values increasing steadily among collectors. Many consider Daisy Makeig-Jones' designs to be excellent investment pieces.
