FAQs

Enamel advertising signs gained popularity from the late 19th century through the mid-20th century as a durable medium for outdoor branding on shops, railway stations, and roadways.

These pieces are produced by fusing powdered glass to a sheet metal base at high temperatures, creating a glossy, weather-resistant vitreous enamel surface.

Authentic examples typically exhibit natural chipping around mounting holes, heavier gauge steel, slight irregularities in the porcelain surface, and genuine oxidation rather than artificially distressed finishes.

Such pieces function well as focal wall art in industrial, rustic, or eclectic spaces, often mounted directly onto exposed brick or neutral plaster walls to add texture and historical character.

Maintenance involves gentle cleaning with mild soap and water, avoiding abrasive scouring pads or harsh chemicals that can scratch the vitreous surface and expose the metal underneath to rust.
