This Georgian occasional table functions as an adjustable mahogany candlestand finished in warm brown with a waxed surface. The round top incorporates an original brass banded edge and a central round dished section, supported by a shaped column and tripod base. A brass pull operates the height mechanism on the stem, and the wood displays natural grain variations alongside subtle surface wear. The piece measures 71 cm high, 38 cm wide, and 38 cm deep. Position this occasional table beside an armchair or at the end of a sofa in a living room to hold drinks, a small lamp, or decorative items. The compact footprint fits neatly into corners, narrow hallways, or beside a fireside chair, adding functional surface space to traditional and transitional interiors alike.

FAQs

Originating in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, adjustable candlestands were designed to hold movable light sources prior to electrification. The Manx tripod configuration features three outward-curved legs attached to a central turned column, providing stability on uneven floors.

Authentic period examples are typically crafted from solid timbers such as mahogany, walnut, or oak, often incorporating brass bindings, threaded wooden screw mechanisms, or cast iron internal ratchets for height adjustment.

Authenticity is indicated by hand-turned components, original thread wear on the adjustment column, natural shrinkage of the wooden top across the grain, and historic patination along the base joints.

These compact pieces function well as accent tables alongside a modern armchair, providing a small surface for drinks or decorative objects while adding historic depth to modern living spaces.

Dust the timber surfaces regularly with a dry microfibre cloth and apply a high-grade beeswax polish annually. Avoid placing the item near direct heat sources or in damp environments to prevent wood movement and joint separation.
