This Georgian mahogany tea table embodies the refined English Country House aesthetic of the mid-eighteenth century. The piece takes the form of a demi-lune occasional table measuring 72 cm high, 76 cm wide, and 38 cm deep, designed with a curved fold-over top in a rich warm brown timber. Fine architectural details include slender cabriole legs terminating in pad feet, a moulded edge along the semi-circular surface, and a central brass keyhole escutcheon fitted to the frieze. Positioned against a narrow wall space, this versatile surface functions well in a hallway, living room, or reception area as a console or display table. The compact footprint makes it practical for smaller rooms while offering an expandable top surface for serving or display purposes. The warm tones of the mahogany grain complement traditional and transitional interiors alike.

FAQs

Originating in 18th-century Britain, a Georgian tea table is an occasional table specifically designed for serving tea. These pieces typically feature a hinged semi-circular or rectangular top that folds down when not in use, allowing the table to function as a compact console.

Georgian cabinetmakers predominantly utilised dense West Indian or Cuban mahogany due to its durability and close grain. Construction methods featured hand-cut dovetail joints, oak or pine secondary timber, and gate-leg mechanisms to support the folding top.

Authentic 18th-century examples display evidence of hand-planed surfaces, irregular dovetail joints, and natural timber oxidisation on the underside. Hardware such as hinges and brass escutcheons should show cast irregularities and hand-cut screws.

A demilune tea table functions as an entryway console in narrow hallways or as a focal point in a dining room alcove. Modern styling includes pairing the piece with contemporary artwork suspended above or displaying minimalist ceramics on its polished surface.

Maintain mahogany furniture by dusting regularly with a dry microfibre cloth and applying beeswax polish once or twice a year. Keep the item away from direct sunlight, radiators, and rapid humidity fluctuations to prevent timber shrinkage or splitting.
