This Victorian table-top dinner gong is a 19th-century decorative piece fashioned from warm brown oak, cattle horn and brass. The design incorporates a circular brass disc suspended by chains between two large curved cattle horns rising from a turned and carved oak base, accompanied by a wooden striker mallet with a rounded head resting in front. Brass mounts reinforce the lower horns, and a central shield-shaped brass plaque decorates the turned wooden mount. The entire ensemble stands 42 cm high, 34 cm wide and 18 cm deep. Placed on a sideboard top, this item brings a touch of Highland hunting lodge style to a dining room, hallway or study as a striking decorative display or functional dinner bell.

Popularised during the late Victorian and Edwardian eras, tabletop dinner gongs were used in prominent households to announce meal times across formal dining rooms and country estates.

These decorative objects typically feature polished brass gongs suspended by chains between polished cattle or buffalo horns, mounted onto carved oak or mahogany bases.

Authentic period examples showcase hand-carved solid timber bases, heavy brass gongs with signs of age, natural horn surface variations, and original wood or felt-wrapped mallets.

Place the gong as a focal statement piece on a hallway sideboard, library desk, or dining room credenza to introduce warmth, historical texture, and tactile interest.

Dust the timber and horn elements regularly with a soft dry cloth, nourish the wood base with beeswax, and clean the brass disc carefully with specialist polish without touching the natural materials.
