Treen encompasses small, functional wooden objects made before the widespread use of plastics. Historically turned on a lathe or carved by hand, these items span domestic, agricultural, and personal spheres, reflecting centuries of regional craftsmanship.

Makers predominantly utilised dense, durable hardwoods such as boxwood, sycamore, maple, and notably lignum vitae due to its exceptional weight and natural oils. Items were typically shaped on foot-powered or pole lathes, resulting in characteristic concentric tool marks and finely balanced profiles.

Authenticity is assessed through surface patina, signs of genuine wear, tool marks left by early turning methods, and the density of the wood. Period items exhibit dry, oxidised surfaces built up over generations of handling rather than modern chemical finishes.

These pieces function well as textural accents on bookshelves, mantels, or sideboards, contrasting against clean modern surfaces. Their organic forms and deep wood tones introduce warmth and historical depth to minimalist or transitional rooms.

Preservation requires maintaining stable indoor humidity levels away from direct heat sources and sunlight to prevent timber splitting. Cleaning should be restricted to a dry or lightly damp lint-free cloth, avoiding modern furniture polishes, silicone sprays, or immersion in water.
