Scagliola is a historic technique used to produce imitation marble and semi-precious stone using plaster, selenite, glue, and natural pigments. Originating in 17th-century Italy, it gained wide popularity across Europe during the 18th and 19th centuries for grand architectural columns, tabletops, and decorative plinths.

Scagliola columns are created by applying a mixture of selenite plaster, animal glues, and earth pigments over a core support structure. Craftspeople insert coloured plaster chips or veins into the plaster mix before curing, smoothing the surface with pumice, and hand-polishing with oil or wax.

Authentic 19th-century scagliola feels slightly warmer to the touch than solid natural stone and often exhibits micro-fine surface crazing under close inspection. Examining the joints where the shaft connects to the socle and marble base will reveal traditional hand-cut assembly and period polishing techniques.
