A cellarette was a lockable container used in the 18th and 19th centuries to store bottles of wine and spirits safely in the dining room before they were served.

They were typically constructed from dense hardwoods like mahogany, often featuring fine crossbanding, veneer work, inlaid satinwood details, and sometimes lead linings to hold ice.

Authentic pieces generally exhibit hand-cut dovetail joints, period-correct timber shrinkage, traditional hand-finished patination, and original brass or steel locking mechanisms.

It can be repurposed as a functional side table in a living room, utilised to hold house plants, or placed as a standalone accent piece in a study to store modern accessories.

Keep the timber away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent cracking, and periodically nourish the wood with traditional beeswax to maintain its finish.
