Silhouette On Plaster By John Miers

Status: This item has been sold
Sold by: Wigs on the Green

Painted on plaster, this silhouette depicts an unknown lady wearing a dress with a frilled collar. Her hair is curled and upswept as was the Regency fashion.

The profile is set in a traditional papier-mache frame with an emblems (rose, thistle and shamrock) hanger and has the artist''s trade label (no. 18) reverse.

Apart from dust under the convex glass, the silhouette is in fine condition. The frame is sound but shows craquelure and has the usual edge nibbles.

Preferring the simplicity and grace of a black profile, John Miers (1758-1821) did not believe in embellishing his silhouettes with gold. He used black soot mixed with beer to create a deep black colour that contrasted well with the shite of the plaster base. Frill and curl details are achieved by thinning the pigment to add texture.

All prices include UK postage. International shipping will be at cost.
