Japanese porcelain ‘Black Ship’ shallow bowl, 19th Century, Meiji Period. The bowl, well painted to the centre, with a circular panel, containing a Dutch merchant ship, firing a canon, within a cobalt blue surround, painted in gilt with two dragons, amongst clouds.
The broad border painted with pairs of Dutch traders, interspersed with further panels of ships, and stylised coats of arms, upon a textile design of dense diaper motif.
Continuous floral scroll, divided by two panels containing ships and traders, adorn the exterior, beneath a continuous iron red whorl motif to the rim.
‘Ju’ mark in gilt to the underside of the base.
Diameter – 24 cm, 9 1/2”.
Height – 7.7 cm, 3”.
Condition – Excellent. No damage. No restoration.
