Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This unusual large Japanese Imari bowl originates from the Meiji period in 1900. The piece is constructed from porcelain and finished with a glossy glaze, decorated by hand in a palette of cobalt blue, terracotta red, green, white, and yellow. The surface displays panelled floral motifs alongside intricate diaper pattern borders and fan decorations, complemented by a scalloped, wavy-shaped edge around the top rim. The bowl measures 10.5 cm high, 34 cm wide, and 34 cm deep. In a modern interior, this decorative bowl serves as a striking ornamental vessel for display in a reception room or hallway. It is well-suited for placement upon a polished wooden sideboard top where its vibrant colours and traditional hand-painted patterns can be readily admired. The wide circular form and shallow profile make it a practical centrepiece for a dining table console, or alternatively as a standalone accent piece on a chest of drawers within an English Country House styled home.

FAQs

Imari porcelain refers to Japanese export wares produced around Arita in Saga Prefecture and shipped from the port of Imari. Developed in the seventeenth century, the style is defined by vibrant hand-painted patterns using underglaze cobalt blue alongside overglaze iron-red enamel, gold leaf, and mineral colours.

Crafted from fine kaolin clay, Imari wares undergo a multi-stage firing process. Initial underglaze cobalt blue decorations are painted before high-temperature firing, after which detailed enamel enamels and gold gilding are applied on top of the glaze and set during a second lower-temperature kiln firing.

Authentic antique Imari porcelain features hand-painted asymmetry, slight inconsistencies in glaze thickness, and visible brushstrokes on enamel work. Unglazed foot rings often display minor orange oxidisation lines where the clay met the kiln atmosphere, and the porcelain body exhibits moderate weight and resonance.

An Imari bowl functions as a focal point when placed on a dark wood sideboard, marble kitchen island, or dining table. The classic contrast of cobalt blue and terracotta red complements neutral palettes, contemporary lacquer finishes, and traditional brass hardware.

Clean gently using lukewarm water and mild dish soap with a soft microfiber cloth. Avoid abrasive scrubbers, chemical solvents, or dishwashers, as these can wear away overglaze enamels and fragile gilding.
