Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

An inkstand, or encrier, is a desktop accessory designed to hold ink, pens, and associated writing implements. During the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries in France, craftsmen combined carved marble bases with fine gilt-bronze (ormolu) mounts to create functional yet decorative pieces for formal writing desks.

These desktop sets typically feature bases carved from solid polished marble, such as Rouge Griotte or Grand Antique, complemented by mounts fashioned from cast brass or gilt bronze (ormolu). The metal components were often chased and fire-gilded to achieve a durable gold finish.

Authentic pieces exhibit high-density marble with hand-bevelled edges and cast metal fittings secured via threaded rods or square nuts underneath the base. The gilding on genuine nineteenth-century ormolu shows natural age variation, crisp chasing detail, and subtle wear in high-touch areas rather than modern uniform electroplating.

Position the piece on a modern executive desk, console table, or library bookshelf to serve as a sculptural focal point. Pairing dark marble and polished metal accents with clean-lined contemporary furniture creates a sophisticated contrast between traditional craftsmanship and modern design.

Dust the surface regularly with a soft, dry microfibre cloth, avoiding harsh chemical cleaners that can etch polished marble or strip the gilt finish. Keep the object away from acidic liquids or moisture, and clean metal mounts using only a dry soft-bristled brush or damp cloth followed by immediate drying.
