The round piece stands on cabriole legs with carved claw feet, paired with four nested curved stools underneath. The large table features a detailed hand-carved relief scene depicting figures and buildings under the glass insert, complemented by ornamental relief carving along the aprons of both the main table and the stools. The overall dimensions measure 52 cm high, 83 cm wide, and 83 cm deep. Position this practical furnishing in a central living area as a coffee table, where the nested stools slide out to provide extra surface space or seating for guests. The sturdy wood construction and intricate decorative motifs suit traditional or eclectic interior spaces requiring functional multi-tier surfaces.

FAQs

Carved tea tables originated in East Asia as low coffee and serving tables, gaining immense popularity as export items during the mid-20th century. They frequently feature intricate narrative scenes carved into the surface, detailing historic architecture, landscapes, or cultural figure folklore.

These tables were typically crafted from dense, durable hardwoods such as teak, rosewood, or camphorwood. Modern and export reproductions often incorporate glass tops to protect the detailed surface carvings while retaining structural usability.

Clean the glass insert separately using a standard glass cleaner, ensuring no liquid seeps onto the carved wood beneath. Dust the wooden carved recesses regularly with a soft, dry brush and apply microcrystalline wax or natural beeswax annually to preserve the timber.

Place the table as a central focal point in a living room paired with clean-lined, neutral upholstery. The rich wood tone and intricate texture contrast effectively against minimalist contemporary sofas, adding visual depth without overwhelming the space.

Authentic pieces exhibit varied depth in the relief carving, showcasing subtle tool marks and variations impossible to achieve with modern machinery. Look for traditional joinery techniques, natural wood grain continuity, and well-fitted nested stools without modern metal fasteners.
