Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Staffordshire figures are earthenware pottery statues produced predominantly in Staffordshire, England, during the nineteenth century. These pieces often depicted historical figures, romanticised couples, animals, or theatrical scenes designed for display on domestic mantelpieces.

They were typically press-moulded or slip-cast from white earthenware clay, fired with a lead glaze, and finished with hand-painted overglaze enamel colours and gilded highlights. Many pieces were designed with a flattened back to sit neatly against a wall or chimney breast.

Authentic nineteenth-century Staffordshire pieces usually feature visible moulding seams, small firing holes in the base to release steam, light glaze crazing, and gentle overglaze enamel wear. Original pieces exhibit hand-painted details and slight weight variations characteristic of early production techniques.

These ceramic items work well when arranged on a mantelpiece, styled within a glazed bookcase, or placed on a console table alongside contemporary decorative objects to create visual contrast within a modern scheme.

Dust gently using a soft microfibre cloth or a dry artist brush to protect delicate overglaze enamels and gilded surfaces. Avoid immersing earthenware in water or using harsh chemical solvents, as moisture can enter fine crazing in the glaze.
