Nineteenth Century Staffordshire Pottery Figure Of A Zebra

£195    $264    €230
A good Staffordshire hand-painted pottery figure of a Zebra dating from circa 1860. This is the rarer exposed leg model . It is in remarkably good condition with no breaks or restoration. There is just one original, tiny firing crack at the junction of the exposed leg and the body. The Zebra is modelled on a grassy hummock on an oval base. A distinguishing feature is the ornament on the Zebra’s forelock.

Victorian Staffordshire animals were inspired by travelling menageries. Pottery animals such as the zebras would have sold well as souvenirs of entertainments and melodramas involving animals.

The first zebra arrived in England in 1762 and was kept at Buckingham Palace before being moved to the Tower of London.
