Description

This beautiful hunting style tapestry with exotic animals in an Arcadian landscape belongs to a rare group of embroidered silk tapestries produced in Tuscany. It is an extraordinary thing. The pale delicate colours shimmer under the light and the design is elegant and pleasing on the eye. The drawing of the landscape and foliage is quite beautiful while the figures are drawn in charming period costume. Note the various animals, including a lion, bear, rabbit and birds, all drawn in a very naturalistic style. There is some minor loss to the silk in places, but it has been cleaned and conserved professionally. This is a tour-de-force, a decorative delight.

Date of Manufacture

Aaron Nejad Carpets and Rugs has dated this Italian Silk Tapestry to the Before 1700 period.

Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

FAQs

Seventeenth-century Italian tapestries were predominantly produced in major artistic centres such as Rome, Florence, and Venice, often commissioned by nobility and the church to adorn grand palazzo walls with mythological, pastoral, or allegorical scenes.

Traditional weavers utilised a combination of wool, silk, and sometimes metal threads like gilt-silver wrapped around a core, employing horizontal or vertical hand-loom weaving techniques to achieve intricate detail and subtle colour gradients.

Authentication involves examining the hand-spun natural dye palette, the specific weave density, backside knotting or stitching construction, and verifying fiber degradation consistent with historical ageing processes using microscopic analysis.

A large historical textile can be mounted cleanly on a non-damaging tension rod or specialised conservation backing, serving as a striking focal texture against minimalist neutral walls in a living room or hallway.

Conservation requires framing or hanging away from direct sunlight and high humidity, avoiding harsh chemical cleaning, and periodically consulting a professional textile conservator for dust removal and structural support.
